Enjoy from my personal collection of NCAA Tournament games. Settling in after coaching my team during a championship game loss at my grade school, I remember watching this game with great interest. Winners of 31 straight games, Duke was facing a Michigan State team that had won 21 games in a row. While Duke was the prohibitive favorite, Michigan State gave the Blue Devils a very tough game, losing by only six points. I especially enjoyed the battle between MSU senior power forward Antonio Smith and Duke sophomore power forward Elton Brand, whom I felt was the ultimate difference this game. Even though Michigan State lost this game, the Spartans left me feeling that they would be the team to beat the following year, which proved to be the case as Michigan State won the 2000 national championship. For Duke, this hard-fought semifinal game would take something out of the Blue Devils prior to Monday night's championship game against UCONN, one of the best title games of all time in my opinion. By the way I really liked the CBS graphics and scoreboard during this time of college basketball. I always thought it was very sharp-looking! Comments are closed.
