Last night the Minnesota Timberwolves fell short of eliminating the Denver Nuggets in the first round of the NBA playoffs, losing Game 5 by the score of 125-113 and having its Western Conference first-round series lead trimmed to a 3 games to 2 advantage.
Without its injured backcourt of Donte DiVincenzo and Anthony Edwards, Minnesota started former Illini Ayo Dosunmu, who was following a 43-point performance off the bench during the Timberwolves' Game Four victory on Saturday night, what some have been calling "The Ayo Dosunmu Game."
In 38 minutes last night, Dosunmu scored 18 points on 7-for-14 from the field, including 3-for-5 from three. Dosunmu added 4 assists and 3 rebounds. Dosunmu is now averaging 21.8 points per game in the series after averaging 14.8 points per game during this sixth season of his career.
With an opportunity to play due to the injuries of DiVicenzo and Edwards, former Illini Terrence Shannon Jr. logged 14 minutes off the bench for Minnesota last night, scoring 15 points on 6-for-10 shooting, including 2-for-4 from three. The second-year-forward Shannon did not play in the first three games of this series before getting seven minutes in Game Four, during which DiVicenzo suffered a season-ending ACL injury early in the first quarter and Edwards hyperextended his left knee late in the second quarter.
Denver kept its season alive thanks to big games from Nikola Jokic (27 points), Jamal Murray (24 points), Spencer Jones (20 points) and Cameron Johnson (18 points).
Dosunmu, Shannon and the rest of the Timberwolves will try to finish off the Nuggets Thursday night back in Minnesota, though the task will be tall as Edwards is expected to miss several weeks.
