Former Illinois Fighting Illini men's basketball player Ayo Dosunmu has decided to sign as a free agent with the Minnesota Timberwolves after a strong playoff run with the franchise.
Traded from Chicago to Minnesota prior to the 2026 NBA Trade Deadline, Dosunmu stepped up big for the Timberwolves in the playoffs, filling in for the injured Donte DiVicenzo and scoring 43 points during a Game Four victory against the Denver Nuggets in the first round. Minnesota was eventually eliminated in six games during the second round by the San Antonio Spurs.
There were rumors that Dosunmu was open to returning to his hometown Chicago, but he clearly made the wiser decision signing with a much better organization in Minnesota, which had to trade Julius Randle to the Brooklyn Nets in order to make this deal work. I'm assuming Dosunmu will start at point guard as DiVicenzo rehabs from injury.
A second round pick of the Bulls during the 2021 NBA Draft, Dosunmu just finished a very affordable 3 year, $21 million deal. He is entering his sixth NBA season with career averages of 11.1 points, 3 rebounds and 3 assists per game.
This fall Dosunmu will be inducted into the University of Illinois Division of Intercollegiate Athletics Hall of Fame.
