Introducing The College Basketball Nostalgic
Saturday, August 13, 2016
Hello, my name is Chris Maynard, and I am proud to introduce The College Basketball Nostalgic.
Mission: The College Basketball Nostalgic will review classic and unforgotten games from the NCAA Tournament, the greatest sporting event in the United States. The College Basketball Nostalgic will utilize my extensive personal DVD collection and YouTube videos to provide insightful analysis, commentary and reviews of unbelievable upsets and amazing games through uniquely-titled sections focusing on specific rounds of the NCAA Tournament. The College Basketball Nostalgic will ideally expand to podcasts and interviews with key figures from past NCAA Tournaments. While focusing more on the past, The College Basketball Nostalgic will occasionally touch on contemporary issues happening in NCAA hoops. Ultimately, The College Basketball Nostalgic will serve as not only a detailed resource of the NCAA Tournament but a creative outlet for me to share personal anecdotes and memories of these games.
Scope: The College Basketball Nostalgic will extensively focus on the NCAA Tournament from 1997 to the current day. As a freshman in high school back in 1997, my basketball fandom began shifting from the Chicago Bulls and the NBA to college basketball, in large part due to the amazing run of the Arizona Wildcats during the 1997 NCAA Tournament. While I was always a fan of college basketball, those three weeks in 1997 transformed me into an NCAA hoops fanatic. From this point on, I began recording as many college basketball games as possible. Beginning with the 1999 NCAA Tournament, I have recorded every NCAA Tournament, starting with clunky and inefficient VHS and transitioning to DVD-R. With this extensive video library and knowledge of the tournament, The College Basketball Nostalgic is best suited to covering the past 20 years, though the site will also explore tournaments, especially Final Fours, prior to 1997.
Inspiration: There is no other event in sports that inspires as much excitement and potential as the NCAA Tournament. It is the classic story of America, where, at least on one day, the small guy has a chance against the big guy. As opposed to a best-of-seven format, where upsets rarely happen, the NCAA Tournament allows for such possibility. In the matter of one game, 40 minutes, two-plus hours, lives and careers can change, and fans can form memories that will last forever. Personally speaking, watching sports has always been a foundation to form and preserve memories of what was happening in my life at the time, with the NCAA Tournament especially doing so in the past 20 years. With this in mind, I strive to show how the NCAA Tournament has inspired me, and hopefully inspire others via my creative writing on these games.
Format: The College Basketball Nostaglic strives to be unique. Rather than posting just to post, I will strive to bring clever, meaningful and insightful writing in the form of game breakdowns, personal anecdotes and longform. As each NCAA Tournament is a collective of individual, team and school stories, The College Basketball Nostalgic will be a storytelling device, with these games serving as the basis for doing so. At the very least, The College Basketball Nostalgic will always be creative and thoughtful, and strive to be a worthwhile read.
Thank you in advance for your time and consideration.
